Athlete Spotlight: Kay!
You all now what an endurance superstar Kay is…and we couldn’t help but share her abilities with everyone else!
We chose to spotlighted Kay in the Dog Haus Running Club September newsletter to exemplify how her hard word and dedication coupled with strength and interval training at CrossFit 626 gave her HUGE PR’s in her running- all the while REDUCING her running mileage.
Read on to learn more about Kay:
1. How has your training and mileage changed since joining CrossFit?
- Pre- CrossFit (only running) Off season: 20-25 miles a wk; In season: 65-70 miles a week
- Now: Off season: 15 miles a week plus 5 days of CrossFit; In season: 45 miles per week plus 4 days CrossFit
(Typical race distance: marathons and half-marathons.)
2. What made you decide to join CrossFit 626?
I decided to join because I felt a plateau in my running performance. I had run 5 marathons at the time and could not get past 3:45. I felt working on my strength and conditioning would yield better results in my running performance.
Since joining CrossFit 626 just over a year-and-a-half ago, I’ve improved and my best marathon result year-to date is 3:12.
3. What benefits have you seen in your running from incorporating strength and interval training in your training?
I’ve feel that by getting stronger I have become a stronger runner, become mentally tougher. A year ago, my PR was 3:21, by staying consistent with CrossFit, I was able to shave off 10 minutes and setting a new personal record for myself. I feel that sub 3 is not an impossible goal for me as I get stronger with CrossFit.

4. Has CrossFit 626 changed any other facets of your life?
Yes, crossfit has changed my life in more ways than I ever imagined.
I work in leadership role which is extremely demanding, together with my husband we are raising a young family, both are equally demanding.
Both professionally and personally, I am constantly giving, CrossFit has allowed me to put things in perspective. It has enabled me to become mentally tougher and am able to handle challenging situations in a more productive manner.
When I joined CrossFit, I had no strength base ( in fact lifting the training bar was challenging). To see my progression has been very rewarding, it has empowered me.
I feel empowered both in personal and professional life. I am a much happier person who is able to balance the stress of being a woman leader in a male dominated industry as well as being patient, loving and nurturing to my children and husband. CrossFit has become a way-of-life of me.
