Have you taken your fishies today?
There are countless well-documented benefits for taking fish oil supplements. Fish oil has been shown to improve a whole host of lifestyle diseases and conditions. The critical players in fish oil: EPA and DHA are specific types of polyunsatured omega-3 fatty acids that your body cannot produce on its own. These omega-3’s must either come from your diet or via supplementation. EPA and DHA are natural anti-inflammatory agents, playing a role in brain health, heart health, protection against cancer, Alzheimer’s and depression, improvement of skin conditions like psoriasis and acne, fetal brain development, inflammatory bowel disorders, and arthritis, just to name a few.
The typical modern diet is rich in another type of PRO-inflammatory polyunsaturated fatty acid called omega-6. When our consumption of omega-6′s far exceeds our intake of omega-3′s, our bodies experience a wide range of negative consequences, all with the underlying cause of increased systemic inflammation. Minimizing dietary intake of omega-6 fatty acids, and supplementing your intake of omega-3 fatty acids, helps to reduce inflammation, and the wide range of downstream effects.
…But I’m young and healthy, so why should I care about this? Turns out, we could all use a little help from the DHA and EPA fairy. Fish oil supplementation not only helps with the above conditions, but also helps with muscle recovery and faster healing after a tough WOD via anti-inflammatory effects.
So, if you’re into trying this fish oil thing (and I think you should), just let your coaches know…we’ll bring out the shot glasses for a fish oil tasting party. We’ve got the good stuff- in lemon, tangerine, vanilla, chocolate, and mint. TGI-Thursday!
